With the 4th of July Holiday weekend upon us, the summer grilling season promotion for beef continues according to Alabama Cattlemen’s Association’s Ed Whatley.

Florida Beef Council’s Jim Handley said due to lower cattle numbers in the state, it helps when they can generate beef checkoff dollars through the Federation of State Beef Councils.

June Beef Month has wrapped up in Georgia but it went well, especially the media tour, according to Ashley Hughes with the Georgia Beef Board.

USDA released their monthly Cattle on Feed report last Friday which shows the number of cattle and calves on feed for slaughter in the U.S. totaled 10.4 million head on June 1 which is 4 percent below last year. USDA livestock analyst Shayle Shagam said the numbers of cattle will continue to diminish until the conditions are right for producers to retain cows for breeding.
At the Florida Cattlemen’s Association Convention this week, Mike Miller with CattleFax looked at what cow-calf producers have to look think about over the next couple of years.

U.S. beef exports have been fairly strong so far this year, but one USDA expert says the pace will slow down as 2009 wears on.

Various activities will keep the Georgia Beef Board staff busy the next few weeks with June beef month underway, as Ashley Hughes says one of those includes a trip to the state capitol this Thursday for the official proclamation signing by the Governor.

The annual summer grilling season promotion through the beef checkoff is off and running again as Roger Butler, who serves on the Florida Beef Council, said they have several programs with different chains underway.

According to Ed Whatley, part of the summer grilling promotional events for the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association is getting involved in trying to beef up the blood supply across the state.
