The Georgia Forage and Grasslands Council Summer Forage Tour offers educational opportunities for livestock producers and we caught up with Dr. Lisa Baxter with UGA to learn more.

“During National Forage Week each June, we host the Georgia Forage and Grasslands Council’s Summer Forage Tour. So this is in collaboration with our state organization and also our Georgia Forage team and local NRCS as well. This year’s summer tour, it will be June 18th from roughly 8 in the morning to 3, 3.30 in the afternoon at the Jimmy Carter Plant Materials Center in Americus, Georgia. This is the first one we’ve had kind of in this southwest district area of Georgia in a while. So it’s going to be an interesting one for sure. We have an excellent group of speakers and build stops lined up,” said Baxter.

“We’re going to start the morning with an in-depth conversation on the dynamics of the forage seed industry. So we can better understand what actually goes into creating a new forage cultivar or variety. We’ll then move to the different field tours, see some silvopasture, native plants, pollinators before coming back inside for a delicious lunch and diving into information on pesticide stewardship and updated regulations. And then finish up with a discussion on our integrated livestock systems, talking about some of the challenges we have with infrastructure and our crop options for moving grazing animals into pivots. So I encourage you to check out the Georgia Forage and Grassland Council’s Facebook page for updated registration information and be sure to register by June 12th,” said Baxter.
