America’s cattle ranchers are getting a major boost from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins has announced the new Ranchers First Initiative, a package of actions aimed at rebuilding the nation’s beef herd, which the department says is currently at a 75-year low. Under the initiative, USDA is introducing new livestock risk protection tools designed to help producers retain breeding heifers and expand herds over time.
Officials say the program will help ranchers manage financial risk while investing in future cattle production. The department is also expanding disaster recovery flexibility by allowing producers to use Emergency Conservation Program assistance on grassland conservation reserve program acres following wildfires and other natural disasters. USDA says the move will help ranchers recover more quickly and restore critical infrastructure.
In addition, USDA is creating new financing opportunities for regional meat processors through a SPUR-granted loan program. The effort is intended to strengthen local processing capacity and support independent and cooperative facilities. The initiative also includes steps to prioritize American beef in federal food purchasing programs and expand support for beginning and veteran farmers and ranchers through specialized loan, conservation, and risk management programs.
Secretary Rollins says the goal is to put ranchers at the center of the nation’s food supply, strengthen rural communities, and ensure future generations can continue raising cattle across America.
