The U.S. Department of Agriculture is launching a new initiative aimed at strengthening America’s meat and poultry processing sector, with the goal of creating more opportunities for livestock producers and increasing competition throughout the supply chain. USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins recently announced the department’s new Small Processor Action Plan, which is designed to reduce regulatory burdens, improve access to technical assistance, and invest in small and very small meat and poultry processing facilities across the country. The department is also streamlining inspection processes and providing additional training and technical support to help smaller processors remain competitive.

For livestock producers across Florida, Georgia, and Alabama, the initiative could mean additional marketing opportunities closer to home. Many cattle producers have long argued that a shortage of local processing facilities limits competition and often forces producers to transport animal’s long distances for harvest. Expanding regional processing capacity could help reduce transportation costs, shorten wait times, and provide more options for producers looking to market locally raised beef and other livestock.

USDA officials say strengthening smaller processors will also help build a more resilient food supply chain while giving consumers greater access to locally produced meat products. As we wrap up the Independence Day holiday weekend, it’s a good time to reflect on the dedication of America’s farmers and ranchers who continue working every day to feed, fuel, and clothe our nation. We hope you and your family had a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July, and as our country begins its 250th year, we look forward to another year of supporting American agriculture.
