The nation’s cotton crop saw a decline in condition ratings this past week. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture meteorologist Brad Rippey, the main area of concern with cotton development and crop condition is in the Southern High Plains region.
Rippey says there is not much change in the overall condition of the nation’s peanut crop.
In Alabama, 95 percent of the cotton is squaring, which compares to 91 percent this time last year. 78 percent is setting bolls. 97 percent of the peanut crop is pegging, which compares to only 92 percent last year at this time.
In Florida, 95 percent of the cotton is squaring, which compares to 92 percent this time last year. But only 66 percent is setting bolls. 94 percent of the peanut crop is pegging, which compares to only 88 percent last year at this time.
In Georgia, 98 percent of the cotton is squaring, which compares to 96 percent this time last year. 79 percent is setting bolls. 99 percent of the peanut crop is pegging, which compares to 97 percent last year at this time.
