Agri View: Costly Disaster Year

You know it seems the western half of this country has been burning or flooding all year. I have not seen any official count on how many fires there have been. But, one must look at amazement at what they have cost.

The first round that ravaged parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Colorado took the lives of several people. Now you cannot put a price on that. But, farmers and ranchers lost rangeland, pastures, cattle, and other livestock that will eventually run into the high millions of dollars. And, almost as soon as the fires were out, ranchers started to rebuild.

One put it this way. “Disaster,” he said, “is part of ranching. Be prepared to move out.” Strong words. But obviously words of a strong foundation.

Yes, 2017 has been a bad year for the West.
