This is the time of the year producers begin to finalize plans for next growing season, even though the crop is not even in the bin yet, but begin to make plans and place seed orders for 2027. Changes continue in the seed business, keeping track of who owns what brands can be a full-time job. In 2019, for example, Dow DuPont spun off its agribusiness division to create Corteva, which announced recently it’s spinning off the seed business.
One brand, LG, will be missing from the 2027 lineup, a result of a recent merger. There are fewer and fewer single-brand seed companies. Of 16 major brands, only three remain single-brand, Beck’s, Stine Seed, and Wyffels hybrids.
This is the bottom-line report. Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, and the University of Maryland each conduct corn and soybean trials with major seed brands.
