The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) is welcoming movement on the Senate’s Farm Bill, saying the legislation brings agriculture one step closer to the certainty of a five-year Farm Bill reauthorization. Following action by the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, pork producers are now urging lawmakers to address one of the industry’s top priorities, preventing what they call a patchwork of state-by-state farm animal housing regulations, including those created by California’s Proposition 12. Rob Brenneman, president of the National Pork Producers Council and a pork producer from Iowa, says producers need protection from being forced to modify facilities every time another state adopts different animal housing requirements.
The organization also argues that Proposition 12 limits the ability of veterinarians to help guide animal care practices based on the latest science. Illinois veterinarian Dr. Bill Hollis and Dr. Aaron Lower say animal welfare cannot be measured by square footage alone, noting that veterinary medicine relies on evolving research and continuous improvement. NPPC leaders contend that differing state regulations could make it more difficult for producers to adopt new science-based management practices and remain competitive.
As Farm Bill negotiations continue, the organization is encouraging congressional leaders to produce a bipartisan bill that keeps pork production affordable, supports animal health and welfare, and includes a national solution to Proposition 12 and similar state requirements.
