
The Wisconsin Agricultural Scientist Who Helped Shape Organic Farming
Long before organic farming became a familiar concept to American consumers and farmers, agricultural scientists were exploring ways to improve soil health and develop farming practices that worked with natural processes. One of those largely overlooked figures was Franklin King, a Wisconsin agricultural scientist whose work helped lay foundations for practices associated with modern organic farming.
King was born in 1848 in Whitewater, Wisconsin, and became an important figure in American agricultural science during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
From 1888 to 1902, King served as a professor of agricultural physics at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. During his years at the university, he taught students while also working to develop and refine agricultural practices that emphasized an understanding of natural agricultural systems.

King’s work is particularly noteworthy because many of the agricultural practices he taught and helped perfect are now viewed as fundamental principles of organic and sustainable farming.

What may seem like common agricultural wisdom today was much more difficult to promote in 1902. King was advocating approaches that would later become increasingly important as farmers and agricultural scientists looked for ways to maintain productive soils and improve long-term agricultural sustainability.
His contributions demonstrate that the history of organic farming did not begin with the modern organic food movement. Rather, its roots can be traced to earlier agricultural scientists who studied the relationship between farming practices, soil, crops and the natural environment.
An Overlooked Figure in American Agriculture History
Franklin King is not as widely remembered as some of America’s better-known agricultural pioneers, but his career represents an important chapter in the development of American agricultural science.
His nearly 15 years as an agricultural physics professor at the University of Wisconsin placed him in a position to influence future generations of agricultural students and producers. His efforts to develop agricultural practices based on natural principles helped establish ideas that would gain greater recognition decades later.
King’s story is a reminder that many of the principles associated with today’s organic and sustainable agriculture have much deeper historical roots.
