Georgia’s peanut crop is progressing well this summer, according to one industry specialist.
Scott Monfort, University of Georgia (UGA) Extension peanut agronomist, said the crop is in “good shape,” despite the early-season weather challenges.
“I would think a majority of our crops, especially the early-planted stuff, which is probably a third of our crop, looks pretty good. They’re growing like gangbusters, especially if you’ve got water,” Monfort said. “Now, if you don’t have moisture right now, yeah, it’s struggling. And we do have those places around. But I’d say most of our crop has gotten a rain or two, here or there.
“The later stuff, around the middle of May, we’ve got some places that are struggling because they just went through quite a bit of adversity there with the weather. But even then, I think they are starting to move. And then the late stuff, it’s kind of the same way. I think some of that actually may be ahead of the May-planted stuff, because it was just better conditions. But now, I mean, overall, I think we’re in good shape.”
