Farm Dog of the Year 2027: Nominations Now Open

Farm Dog of the Year

Farmers and ranchers across the country have a new opportunity to spotlight their most loyal partners—their farm dogs. The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) has officially opened nominations for the 2027 Farm Bureau Farm Dog of the Year contest, celebrating the hardworking dogs that play a vital role in American agriculture.

Now in its ninth year, the contest is organized by the American Farm Bureau Federation and supported by Nestlé Purina PetCare. The program celebrates dogs that contribute to farm operations while also serving as loyal companions to farm families.

The grand prize winner will receive $5,000 and a year’s supply of Purina Pro Plan dog food. The top dog will also be honored at an awards ceremony during the American Farm Bureau Convention in Charlotte in January 2027 and featured in a professionally produced video.

American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall said farm dogs are indispensable on many operations. He noted that beyond companionship, they often take on responsibilities such as herding livestock, deterring predators, opening gates and assisting with daily chores.

The contest also highlights the human-animal bond. Research conducted through a collaboration between the Mayo Clinic and Purina suggests that spending as little as 20 minutes with a dog can reduce stress levels, lower heart rate and improve overall well-being.

Eligible entries must come from Farm Bureau members and include written responses, at least one photo and an optional video. Nominations are due by July 11, 2026.

In addition to the main award, the contest will again feature the People’s Choice Pup competition. Selected dog profiles will be shared online beginning in September, allowing the public to vote for their favorite. The winner of that category will receive $2,500 and recognition on social media.
