As part of efforts to reopen the federal government, the U.S. Senate has passed a funding measure that provides USDA appropriations for fiscal year 2026 and includes an extension of farm bill programs set to expire at the end of the year. The measure also extends federal grain inspection activities, a critical function for maintaining international trade and domestic commodity market confidence.

This latest Senate action ensures the continuation of essential agricultural and nutrition programs that were not included in the broader “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a legislative package that contained significant but incomplete farm bill updates. The extension will allow more time for lawmakers to finalize comprehensive reauthorization of farm, nutrition, and conservation programs vital to rural America.

Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Chairman John Boozman (R-Ark.) emphasized the importance of this step for American agriculture, saying:

“Ending the government shutdown ensures critical USDA services resume so vulnerable families no longer experience disruptions to nutrition benefits, farmers can access the programs and personnel they rely on to keep their operations running efficiently and disaster assistance is delivered. We advanced long-overdue farm bill policy improvements in the One Big Beautiful Bill, including enhanced risk management tools farmers have been calling for, and we’re continuing work to reauthorize other key initiatives. Extending the farm bill and the U.S. Grain Standards Act gives us more time to finalize these programs essential to farmers, ranchers and rural America.”

With the government set to reopen and USDA funding secured through September 30, 2026, farmers, ranchers, and agricultural businesses can now regain access to critical support programs, market data, and federal assistance.

The extension of the U.S. Grain Standards Act also ensures continued operation of federal grain inspection services—vital for maintaining the integrity of U.S. exports and ensuring fair market practices.
