Land ownership is still the American dream for many. Since the Homestead Act of 1862, it has been the American dream to own land. Back then, a popular phrase was a desire to own 40 acres and a couple of mules.
Well, of course, the size of farms and the equipment used to farm them has changed dramatically, but farm real estate agents agree the desire to own land is still as great as ever. A recent report by the University of Illinois showing farm and ranch land across 32 states in their study saw an average return on investment over 10.5% from 1970 to 2023. In comparison, the Dow showed a return of 7.1% and the Nasdaq 10.5% over the same 53 years.
