USDA has released their September Cattle on Feed Report and the new numbers indicate cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the U.S. for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head was 11.1 million head on September 1, 2023. The inventory was 2 percent below September 1, 2022.

As Gary Crawford reports, the numbers of cattle in our country continue to fall.

Placements in feedlots during August at 2.00 million head was 5 percent below 2022. Net placements were 1.95 million head. During August, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 420,000 head, 600-699 pounds were 305,000 head, 700-799 pounds were 455,000 head, 800-899 pounds were 488,000 head, 900-999 pounds were 245,000 head, and 1,000 pounds and greater were 90,000 head.

Marketing’s of fed cattle during August at 1.88 million head is 6 percent below 2022.
