Last week, Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried said her office was notified that Gov. Ron DeSantis canceled the scheduled June 28 meeting of the Florida Cabinet and a June 29 meeting of the state Board of Executive Clemency. Fried, who has frequently clashed with DeSantis over Cabinet-related issues, criticized the cancellation.
But according to the Cabinet website, a meeting has been scheduled for Aug. 23, the same day as this year’s primary elections. Also, the schedule posted shows Gov. Ron DeSantis and Cabinet members will meet Aug. 24 as the state Board of Executive Clemency.
A News Service of Florida story notes Fried, the only Democrat on the Cabinet, is also a candidate in the Aug. 23 Democratic gubernatorial primary. She is battling U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. DeSantis, Attorney General Ashley Moody and Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis are expected to face little, if any competition in the primaries as they seek re-election.
