Cathy Isom gives you several tried and true methods on how to stop weeds from taking over your garden. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.

Stopping Weeds from Taking Over Your Garden

Nobody likes weeds in their garden. They can pop up in every available bare spot and, if left to grow, can reach massive proportions. Weeds are often ugly, they steal your plant’s nutrition, and they spread disease. Learning how to prevent them from popping up in the first place will save you from much aggravation.

One way to stop them, add mulch. The more mulch you add, the more you will suppress them. Weed seeds are always under the soil’s surface waiting to germinate. That’s why when you have a bare surface or you dig and don’t mulch, weeds pop up.

Another successful method of preventing weeds is crowding your garden space with good plants. If there’s no space for the weeks to grow, they can’t take hold.

Limit digging and tilling so you won’t disturb the soil.

You can cover your garden with newspaper or cardboard to stop weeds. It’s perfect for smaller areas and spots you’re preparing for ground cover.

Boiling water and then pouring over weeds works, too. It’s a perfect method for any type of weed that may be between stones and rock pathways.

An old fashioned method known for getting rid of pesky weeds:  mixing a gallon of white vinegar and 1 tablespoon of salt. Using a spray bottle soak the leaves, stalk and surrounding soil of offending weeds.
