We all have abundant produce in our gardens. Cathy Isom lets you know why you should plant a garden specifically for canning. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
Canning is a great way to preserve an abundant harvest, as well as being a time and money saver. Canning will help you save produce before it spoils so you and your family can enjoy it later.
It’s best to plan a canning garden around exactly what you’d like to preserve. Starting with a plan and knowing your crops’ purpose, you’ll get the maximum production out of your space, as well as reduce waste. You can even plan ahead for specific recipes. Whether it’s a supply of home grown salsa for the year, or all of the fixings of a green bean salad, an organized blueprint will make the job easier. You may also want to sow a few plants in succession so that you have a fresh supply of food before or after canning as well.
In the next couple of days, we will talk about how to plan your garden specifically for canning. And, tell you how to make the most of your space and time to take your canning garden to the next level.
