Celebrating National Chocolate Milk Day

Dan Dairy, This Land of Ours

celebratingCathy Isom begins her series of celebrating food by filling you in on why you’ll want to get your hands on a sweet, frosty, chocolatey treat today. That’s coming up on this Land of Ours.

Celebrating National Chocolate Milk Day

Across the country, folks will be enjoying a tall, frosty glass of chocolate milk. Today is National Chocolate Milk Day, which is observed annually on September 27.

Chocolate milk was invented in Jamaica in the late 1680’s, by a man named Hans Sloane. While Sloane was in Jamaica, he encountered a beverage the locals drank made with cocoa mixed with water. After trying it, he reported the flavor to be nauseating.  After some experimentation, Sloane found a way to mix the cocoa with milk to make it more pleasant tasting. Now people enjoy this delicious drink every day.

Today chocolate milk can be purchased premixed or it can be made at home with either cocoa powder and a sweetener or with melted chocolate, chocolate syrup or chocolate milk mix.

A glass of chocolate milk will cost you about 188 calories per 8 ounce glass.

Mix up some chocolate milk to drink and use #ChocolateMilkDay to post on social media.
