Though we are still months away from the first harvest of tiny sundries grapes, today we are celebrating National Raisin Day.
While sunlight dries most grapes naturally in vineyards, some are mechanically dehydrated. People have been enjoying raisins for as long as grapes have been growing.
Raisins are naturally low in fat and contain healthy nutrients. A small box, about an ounce and a half, is only 129 calories. They have about 3% protein, have antioxidants, are low in sodium and contain no cholesterol.
California produces the majority of the world’s raisin supply.
