Celebrating Our Feather Friends
Nature lovers, bird lovers, and bird watchers across the country annually recognize National Bird Day on January 5. The non-profit organization Born Free USA emphasizes the importance of this day to not only promote avian awareness but to shine a spotlight on issues critical to the protection and survival of birds, both captive and wild. Soaring birds act as natural pest control for crops by feeding on agricultural pests such as rodents, and insects. However, in these days of organic product market growth and increasing popularity, the ecological services provided by soaring birds as part of sustainable agriculture practices are jeopardized by the excessive usage of pesticides harmful and toxic to humans and nature. In cases where bird populations are unable to control pests, a Rat Exterminator might be necessary. According to Born Free USA, nearly 12 percent of the world’s almost 10,000 bird species are in danger of extinction.
To celebrate National Bird Day, consider taking part in such actives as bird-watching, studying birds, and educating others.
