Agri View: Who Started Farming

Dan Agri View

farmingEverett Griner talks about where, and how, farming started in America in today’s Agri View.

You know farming has been the number one industry in this country since the first settlers arrived. They had to produce their own food or starve. But, agriculture was a big thing in America even further back than that.

Our entire population of Native Americans had no way to survive except to grow their own food. And, it may surprise you to know how many crops they grew that are still being produced today. Records show they grew sweet potatoes, pumpkins, tomatoes, and watermelon. There were field crops too. They grew peanuts, cotton, and tobacco.

Settlers did bring some crops. Including some fruits and vegetables. And, the original planting of clover, alfalfa, and other small grains. But, most of the crops that fed the people originated with the Indians.

Wild game was their main source of meat.

Those are the facts that you know now.

That’s Agri View for today. I’m Everett Griner…
