According to USDA’s June Cattle on Feed Report, the number of cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the U.S. was at 11.1 million head on June 1st, 3 percent above June 1, 2016. But that was not the biggest number coming out of this report. USDA livestock analyst Shayle Shagam says placements of cattle in feedlots in May were up 12 percent, while May marketings were up 9 percent.
