If you think there’s been a lot more purple-colored foods in your grocery stores lately, you’re not imagining things.
The lavender hues and amethyst colored veggies, like cauliflower and carrots, are popping and cropping up everywhere this year. But the trendy purple food isn’t just making a splash in the produce aisle. National retailer Whole Foods Market has described purple anything indicative of a high level of antioxidants. It’s one of the key nutrition trends of 2017.
Here’s how you can join in the purple trend and include the richly colored foods into your diet. Go for Beets! It’s a superfood and among the most nutritious of vegetables, great for cardiovascular health and lowering cholesterol.
If you’re into sweet cereals like Frosted Flakes, there’s a healthy version in the color purple called Peace Cereal. The purple corn is rich in anthocyanins, which offer anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. The non-GMO cereal is lightly sweetened and has 90 calories in a 3/4 cup serving.
Perhaps you want to give your Taco Tuesday a bit of a purple flair? You could try the vegan and gluten-free Exotic Black Rice tortillas from Food for Life. They have a deep, rich purple color. The purple in the tortilla comes from the high mineral content of the soil in which the grain is grown. And chia seeds help enhance the fiber content.
