Everett Griner talks about how the migrant labor shortage problem will hurt everybody in today’s Agri View.
Well our new president’s efforts to control our borders and deport illegals is not a good thing for farmers. It is going to create a labor shortage that’s already a serious challenge. Present laws that permit migrant farm workers to come here legally are woefully inadequate. Most of the crops harvested now are done by illegal migrant farmworkers. I live in a major vegetable-producing area. Without migrants, most of whom are here illegally, farmers can go back to cotton, corn and soybeans. Not just Mexicans, migrants come from all over Latin America to harvest crops that grow even in the northern regions of our country. Without migrants there won’t be enough to feed us. And what is available, you won’t be able to afford. How do you like that?
