Crop Rotation

Dan This Land of Ours

crop rotation
Everyone that plants a garden wants a bountiful crop. Cathy Isom explains why crop rotation is so important for your garden. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.

When it comes to wanting a bountiful garden year after year, probably one of the most important things you can do for it, is keep rotating your annual crops. In other words, moving those fruit and veggie crop rotationcrops around, rather than planting them in the same location year after year. Doing so will promote healthier soil and higher productivity, as well as preventing unwanted pests and disease. In a way, you’re tricking the soil, and the unwanted pests, who might be waiting for last year’s crop to pop up again. Its also important to become familiar with your plants characteristics and behaviors, as some plants have certain qualities that make them better suited to different positions in a rotation. For example, some plants increase soil fertility, such as Legumes and pulses. While others are good at finding nutrients for themselves, like kale, cabbage and broccoli. Crop rotation is recommended about every four years.
