It is Peanut Butter and Jelly time throughout school systems in Southwest Georgia. The Georgia Peanut Commission has partnered with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Southeast United Dairy Industry Association and schools throughout Southwest Georgia to celebrate Peanut Butter and Jelly Day on March 15, 2017.
The Georgia Peanut Commission has donated peanuts, educational materials for teachers and coloring books to all of the schools participating in the event. Additionally, GPC will present the media center at the elementary schools with a copy of Janet Nolan’s, PB&J Hooray! book. Participating schools in Colquitt, Decatur, Early, Miller, Seminole and Worth counties will celebrate on March 15 and Mitchell County will celebrate on March 31, 2017.
“We are excited to work with these school districts and assist them with promoting Georgia’s official state crop – the peanut,” says Armond Morris, chairman of the Georgia Peanut Commission. “The peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with a glass of milk provide students with a nutritional staple to help them throughout the school day.”
Cafeteria promotions will feature a peanut driven menu and some schools will have farmer’s reading PB&J Hooray to classes and bringing peanut harvest equipment to the schools for the children to see. Georgia’s peanut farmers will be highlighted in class lessons to strengthen the connection from peanuts traveling from the farm to their table.
