It’s hard to say how many years Vinegar has been used in this land of ours, so it just might be the world’s oldest ingredient. And every November 1st it’s celebrated with it’s very own National Vinegar Day.

Vinegar is produced either by a fast or slow fermentation process. Slow methods could take months or up to a year. It comes in several varieties and has many uses for cooking and food preparation and cleaning and disinfecting. Some forms of vinegar are believed to have health benefits.

Some common uses of vinegar include:

  • pickling processes, vinaigrette and other salad dressings
  • An important ingredient in mustard, ketchup, barbecue sauce and mayonnaise
  • A condiment for fish and chips
  • flavoring for potato chips
  • a dip for crab meat
  • A substitute for fresh lemon juice
  • Used in sushi rice
  • Commonly put into mint sauce
  • Used in making some beverages
  • Used for medical remedies and treatments
  • Used for cleaning
  • Used in gardening and pest control
