Smithfield Foods has announced it is making progress in phasing out gestation crates. Daily Press reports that by the end of last year, Murphy-Brown had transitioned 71.3-percent of all pregnant sows on company-owned farms into group housing. Smithfield’s goal is to move all sows out of gestation crates by 2017.
