KISSIMMEE, Fla. (May 1, 2012) – May 1 kicks off Florida Beef Month for the first time in the Sunshine State. The month-long program, sponsored by the Florida Beef Council, is aimed at building awareness of beef as a highly versatile and affordable commodity.

Florida is home to the largest beef cattle ranch in the United States and ranks eleventh in the nation in the number of beef cows. Cash receipts from the sale of cattle in Florida in 2011 reached $502 million, making Florida’s beef industry a profitable component of our state’s agricultural industry.

In addition to the official proclamation by Governor Rick Scott designating May as Florida Beef Month, the Florida Beef Council will be working with Leslie Green, The Hungry Housewife, as its exclusive blogger and spokesperson during the campaign. Green will submit weekly recipes and photos, make media appearances and perform cooking demos utilizing Florida Beef, like Filet Mignon with Mushroom Mascarpone Sauce and Asian Beef Salad with Citrus Vinaigrette.

“We’re so proud and excited to announce the first ever official Florida Beef Month,” notes Jim Handley, CEO of the Florida Beef Council. “Our goal is for Florida residents to recognize how relevant beef is to the industry and what beef does for our great state.”

As part of a partnership, Tampa-based Sweetbay Supermarket will offer beef recipe tastings at select stores to drive beef sales, special summer grilling in-store signage, and underwrite billboards in Tampa and St. Petersburg. The Florida Beef Council will also sponsor an associate-specific contest to increase beef sales.
