AGRItunity 2010, a West Central Florida farming conference and trade show, will take place 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23 at the Sumter County Fairgrounds near Webster. The conference’s keynote address features well-known local food advocate Sharon Yeago of the Farmers Market Coalition. She’ll discuss local marketing opportunities and funding to start or expand operations.

Presentations in the livestock sessions include pastured poultry, pasture management, preventative horse healthcare and grass-fed beef. The crops sessions will cover such topics as successful heirloom vegetable production, food safety for small farms, peaches and other stone fruit, plus a presentation on beekeeping that includes on-site demonstrations.

One of the most popular AGRItunity events is the trade show. This year it features indoor exhibits of products and services, plus an outdoor equipment show. Antique equipment demonstrations and livestock displays are also slated. Participants should have ample time to visit exhibitors between educational sessions.

The event kicks off with a farm tour on Friday, Jan. 22. Participants will visit six agricultural operations in Citrus, Hernando, Pasco and Sumter counties. The tour is free, but space is limited and reservations are required. Call the Sumter County extension office at 352-793-2728 for more information.

Admission to the conference and trade show Jan. 23 is $10 in advance and $15 at the door; 4-H and FFA members wearing their club shirts, jackets, etc. will be admitted free.
