Lake Soil & Water Conservation District congratulates students for winning state land-judging competition

TAVARES — The Lake Soil and Water Conservation District congratulates Clermont Middle and East Ridge High students who won the State Land Judging Contest for Future Farmers of America in Alachua County on March 27.

The competition tests students’ knowledge of soil types and land management. Individual scorecards are evaluated on characteristics of soils, as well as planned use and limitations of the land.

The East Ridge High School Team will represent Florida at the national contest in Oklahoma on May 5-7. The high school team includes senior Nicole Lewis, junior Casey Raines and sophomores Melissa and Megan Shutts. Lewis was the state high individual scorer and was also the top placer at the local competition in Paisley. The advisor for the East Ridge team is teacher Danny Garner.

The Clermont Middle School Team includes Thomas Giallella, Kaelyn Peacock, Luke Caudill and Devin McTigue, who had the second highest individual score at the state competition. Middle school teams do not compete in the national competition. The advisor for the Clermont Middle team is teacher Mike Garner.
