Orange Juice Dumping Decision OVERTURNED??

Gary Cooper Citrus, Florida, International

There is some debate about what the recent decision by the U S International Trade Court in New York actually means. Hear more in this report and stay tuned for more in coming days as we ask industry leaders what is going on from their first-hand perspectives.
Listen To wma Report (1:00 wma) NEWS REPORTS EARLY THIS WEEK SAY A NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL TRADE COURT HAS OVERTURNED AN EARLIER DECISION BY THE INTERNATIONAL TRADE COMMISSION THAT SAID BRAZILIAN O J PROCESSORS DUMPED ORANGE JUICE INTO THE U S MARKET ILLEGALLY BACK IN THE 2003 2004 SEASON. FLORIDA CITRUS MUTUAL, FLORIDA’S NATURAL GROWERS IN LAKE WALES AND OTHERS ORIGINALLY BROUGHT THE SUIT AND UNTIL NOW THOUGHT THEY WERE ON THE WINNING SIDE. NOW A NEWS ITEM IN THE LAKELAND LEDGER THIS WEEK SAYS THE COURT HAS CALLED THE PREVIOUS TRADE COMMISSION RULING ‘SERIOUSLY FLAWED’, AND THAT IS A CHARACTERIZATION CITRUS MUTUAL’S LAWYERS SAY IS AN EXAGGERATION. BUT IT SEEMS NOW IT IS NOT THE CLEAR WIN FLORIDA CITRUS FOLKS THOUGHT THEY HAD. THE PREVIOUS DECISION WOULD IMPOSE HUGE TARIFFS ON IMPORTED ORANGE JUICE FROM BRAZIL BUT NOW THAT’S APPARENTLY STILL ON HOLD TOO UNTIL THIS SORTS OUT. MUTUAL’S LAWYERS SAY THE COMMISSION CAN RE-OPEN THINGS AFTER SOME MORE PAPER FILINGS AND WHATEVER…WE’LL HAVE MORE ON IT IN DAYS AHEAD, IT’S CERTAIN TO BE A TOPIC OF DISCUSSION AT THE CITRUS COMMISSION MEETING WEDNESDAY IN LAKELAND AS WELL, WHERE WE’LL ASK INDUSTRY NEWSMAKERS THEMSELVES FOR THE FACTS FROM THEIR OWN PERSPECTIVES.
