Eggs are taking center stage this weekend across the country and especially earlier this week as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins made a trip to North Carolina to a layer operation who donated the eggs for the upcoming White House Easter Egg Roll.
Secretary Rollins said, “We were all together in North Carolina on Monday loading the 30,000 eggs on that were donated by the Braswell Family Farm, fifth generation egg farmer in North Carolina. This coming Monday continues a tradition that started in 1878 under President Rutherford B. Hayes. That is the Easter Egg Roll. What I didn’t know, a bunch of kids used to go to the Capitol and do their own egg roll, and then it made such a mess of the turf for the grass, this is 1870s, that Congress passed a law that said no more egg rolling on congressional grounds. So the kids actually caught President Rutherford B. Hayes at the gate going into the White House and asked can we move our egg roll to the White House and President Hayes said yes.”
“The eggs that will be taking over to the White House, the 30,000 were donated from the Braswell Family Farms. We’ll also have about 150 of our egg farmers on the South Lawn with their families for the Easter Egg Roll. We’ve invited egg farmers from all over the country to come and be a part of the event, the American Egg Board, their partnership and all of this,” said Secretary Rollins.
