State legislative sessions are opening this week across the Southeast, marking the start of months of policy discussions that will shape state budgets and priorities for the year ahead. Florida, Alabama, and Georgia lawmakers are all convening in January, with agriculture-related issues expected to remain an important part of the conversation.

Florida’s 2026 legislative session officially begins January 13 and will run for 60 legislative days, concluding in March. During that time, lawmakers will be tasked with passing the state budget and considering legislation on a wide range of issues impacting Florida residents, including agriculture, natural resources, and rural communities.

The Alabama Legislature will also convene on January 13. Similar to Florida, Alabama lawmakers will work through budget negotiations and proposed legislation before wrapping up their session in March. As in previous years, agricultural policy, tax issues, and rural development are expected to be among the topics addressed.

Meanwhile, the Georgia General Assembly began its legislative session on January 12. Georgia lawmakers will meet for 40 legislative days and are scheduled to adjourn Sine Die in early April. As with neighboring states, passing the state budget will be a priority before lawmakers conclude their work, along with consideration of additional legislative efforts focused on issues important to Georgians.

According to those monitoring the upcoming sessions, legislative activity across the region may be relatively mild. With an election season approaching, there is an expectation that fewer polarizing or controversial legislative efforts will be brought forward, allowing lawmakers to focus on core responsibilities such as budget passage and constituent priorities.

One common thread among all three southeastern states is the presence of agricultural producers serving within each legislative body. Their firsthand experience in farming and ranching helps ensure agriculture remains represented as lawmakers debate policies affecting land use, taxes, labor, and rural infrastructure.

Agricultural producers across the Southeast are encouraged to stay engaged throughout the legislative process. Participation can take place through state agricultural organizations or by directly contacting elected senators and representatives. Staying informed and involved helps ensure the voice of agriculture continues to be heard as state lawmakers navigate the 2026 legislative sessions.
