John Powell and Ken Barton Recognized for Lifelong Service and Advocacy

At the recent Southern Peanut Growers Conference held in Florida, two outstanding leaders in the peanut industry were honored with the prestigious Valor Awards, presented by Valent U.S.A. The awards ceremony was led by John Alton, who defined the significance of the award as recognizing “great courage in the face of danger, especially in battle.”
The first Valor Award was presented to John Powell of Albany, Georgia, a legendary figure in the peanut sector. Powell retired as Executive Director of the American Peanut Shellers Association in August of 2024, capping a remarkable 38-year career leading the organization. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame upon his retirement.
Powell’s legacy extends beyond administration. He served as President of the Peanut Institute since its founding in 1996 and also led the Peanut Institute Foundation. His work in peanut research, promotion, and industry development earned him deep respect and numerous honors throughout the peanut community.
The second Valor Award was awarded to Ken Barton of Florida, who retired as Executive Director of the Florida Peanut Producers Association in March 2025. Barton dedicated 23 years to leading the organization, becoming a key advocate not only for Florida peanut growers but also for producers across the country.
“Ken has been a strong advocate for peanut growers in Florida and also across the nation. He’s worked on strengthening the peanut industry through research, promotion, and education. His efforts have left a meaningful impact on the peanut industry.”
The Southern Peanut Growers Conference Valor Awards serve as a reminder of the personal sacrifices and professional dedication of those who have shaped the U.S. peanut industry for decades. Both honorees exemplify leadership, integrity, and vision, leaving a legacy that will inspire future generations of peanut producers and advocates.
Presented by Valent USA, the Valor Awards are a highlight of the annual conference, bringing together stakeholders from across the Southeast to celebrate progress, advocacy, and industry excellence.
