The US Department of Health and Human Services, along with the US Food and Drug Administration have announced new measures to phase out all petroleum based synthetic dyes in the US food supply. These measures include establishing a timeline for transition, initiating the process to revoke authorization for citrus red No. 2 and Orange B within the coming months, working with industry to eliminate six synthetic dyes from the food supply by the end of 2026, authorizing four new color additives and accelerating the review and approval of others, partnering with the National Institutes of Health to conduct comprehensive research food additives impacts on children and requesting food companies to remove FD&C Red No. 3. In a voluntary move, the International Dairy Foods Association has announced their Healthy Dairy in Schools Commitment, an effort to eliminate the use of certified artificial colors Red 3, Red 40, Green 3, Blue 1, Blue 2, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 in all milk, cheese and yogurt products sold to schools for use in the National School Lunch Program and/or the School Breakfast Program by the start of the 2026-2027 school year. US Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins applauded theses efforts saying, “America’s dairy farmers and milk processors have always led the way in providing our families and schoolchildren with healthy, nutritious, and delicious milk products. While I look forward to getting whole milk back into our schools, today’s announcement shows how the dairy industry is voluntarily driving change and giving consumers what they want, without government mandates. I thank IDFA and the dairy industry for leading the way and look forward to other industries thinking about how together, we can Make America Healthy Again.”
