The Alabama Cattlemen’s Association (ACA) awarded the inaugural Heart of Beef Month award to Michael Pounders from Franklin County.
Josie Jones with the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association, spoke with Southeast AgNet’s Dale Sandlin. She explained the contest and the volunteer efforts to promote beef during Alabama’s 60th Beef Month this year. Josie also shared the efforts of this year’s award winner, Michael Pounders of Franklin County.

So our Heart of Beef Month award is one that came about after a very exciting contest. We have our Cattlemen of Beef Month contest every single year and this year it was even more competitive than normal.
And something that we took away from it is we have some counties where there’s somebody who really just goes above and beyond to promote Beef Month and promote the producers who work so hard to produce the beef product. And so we wanted to acknowledge them outside of that group effort of somebody who took personal initiative to promote beef, to promote October Beef Month and work really hard to get into their local community.
This was the first year that we presented that, and our 2024 winner was Michael Pounders of Franklin County. He did a phenomenal job just getting into his community and reaching out to all of the different consumer groups. Everything from the kids and culinary programs, and FFA programs, all the way to the people in nursing homes who had poured into their communities before. Teaching them about how beef can still be a part of their diet and fit into their life.
We’re really proud of him and all the hard work that he did and appreciate everything that he did for our 60th October Beef Month.
