The calendar says mid-October. Combine that with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and fried peanuts and it’s the time of year for the Georgia Peanut Commission (GPC) to promote the state’s crop at the Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie, Georgia.
That promotional campaign started on Tuesday and will continue through Thursday.
Maddie Frost, project coordinator for farm and field services at the Georgia Peanut Commission, talked about this opportunity to continue the educational effort of promoting Georgia peanuts.
“We always look forward to this time of year. This is a time to get one on one with the farmer, especially during this time of the season with them harvesting. We don’t exactly get to see them because they’re so busy as we are as well. This is the time to get to have a conversation with them, visit with folks and pass out Georgia fried peanuts,” Frost said. “We also have the PB&Js which are always a big hit. We have a lot of informational stuff, just really pushing Georgia peanuts and what exactly we do at the commission and what we’ve got going on in the industries. It’s always something to really look forward to.”
Georgia’s peanut farmers produced 53% of the United States’ peanut crop in 2023, equating to more than 1.56 million tons. Producers harvested 778,000 acres, yielding an average of 4,070 pounds per acre.
