Well as you remember the fallen service members that have fought for our nation this Memorial Day, it’s important to keep in mind that freedom is not free. Freedom to come and go as you’d like, worship as you please and vote for who you prefer – that freedom was paid for domestically and abroad under a banner of red, white and blue.

As you fire up your grill this holiday, and kick off summer grilling season, it is important to keep something else in mind: food safety. Along with preventing cross contamination of cooking utensils and containers, cooking meat and poultry to the correct internal temperature is a major key to preventing food-borne illness. Meredith Carothers, a food safety expert with USDA’s Meat and Poultry Hotline shares minimum recommended internal cooking temperatures for the various meat and poultry products that might find their way onto your grill.

The USDA’s Meat and Poultry Hotline can be reached at 888-MPHOTLINE(888-674-6854) or ask questions online here.
