ATHENS, GA (USDA/NASS-September 12, 2019) — During the last week of September, pecan growers will receive a survey from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). The agency is taking a look into the 2019 pecan production forecast.

“The pecan industry is a big player, especially in southern agriculture and it is crucial for us to have accurate data about this key sector of the economy,” said NASS Acting Southern Regional Director Erika White. “More than 300 producers in Georgia will be contacted to accurately measure 2019 acreage and production for pecans. The data collected from this survey will also help set pecan acreage and production estimates at the state and U.S. level.”

About 2,600 survey participants across the country will be contacted to gather 2019 information. As an alternative to mailing the survey back and to help save both time and money, growers will have the option to respond to the survey securely online. Farmers who have not responded by September 27 may be contacted for a telephone or personal interview by a National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) enumerator who will help them fill out the survey form.

NASS safeguards the privacy of all respondents and publishes only aggregate data, ensuring that no individual operation or producer can be identified.

Survey results will be published in the October Crop Production report, to be released on October 10. These and all NASS reports are available online at www.nass.usda.gov. For more information call the NASS Southern Regional Field Office at (800) 253-4419.
