Cathy Isom gives us a bit of history while telling us about the month long celebration for a favorite dairy product that comes in many varieties of flavors, textures, and forms. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
Celebrating National Cheese Month
October is National Cheese month. There are so many reasons to love this dairy product, not to mention the many varieties to sink our teeth in. This month, we celebrate the many diverse cheeses, and the farmers, cheesemakers, retailers, cheesemongers, and chefs who bring them to your table.
In America, Mozzarella is the most popular cheese. Can you say Pizza? Cheddar cheese obviously a close second. Wisconsin is the top cheese producing state in the United States. More than two and a half billion pounds of cheese are produced there.
Cheese can be produced from using cows, sheeps, goats, or buffalo, and can be flavored by adding a number of ingredients including spices, wood smoke, garlic, herbs, black pepper, and even fruit. Cheese generally has a high content of calcium, protein, and fat.
