Celebrating National Tequila Day

Tuesday July 24th is National Tequila Day. This famous Mexican spirit comes from the Blue Agave plant. It’s made from 51% of the plant to be exact and takes up to 12 to mature enough to make Tequila.

While it’s the national drink of Mexico, it’s also widely consumed in America. There are a number of different categories of tequila including white, golden, and silver. It can be consumed as a shot, typically in a one ounce shot glass.  It can also be enjoyed in a margarita or any number of mixed beverages.

Tequila does have some health benefits. Studies have shown that a component in tequila helps break down dietary fat, which can lower the levels of bad cholesterol. A shot taken after dinner can aid your body’s digestion. Additionally, sugars found in Blue Agave could lower blood glucose levels for people with type 2 diabetes. It also could help obese people lose weight.

One ounce of tequila is about 64 calories.
