Everett Griner talks about the effect a tariff will have on the pecan crop in today’s Agri View. He has some interesting facts and a bit of history about the pecan.
Tariff Effect on the Pecan Crop-Hard Nut to Crack
There are a lot of tree nuts grown in the United States. The pecan is the only one that is native to this country. Did you know that? Almonds are an Asian crop. Pistachios came from the Middle East. I don’t know about walnuts, but they came from somewhere else.
The pecan is on the fast track to become one of the world’s best sellers. In 2012, the U.S. crop was worth about $6 billion dollars. The United States is no longer the only country where pecans are gaining market. Growth in production is rapidly rising in South Africa, Mexico and Australia. All is not well for the future of the U.S. crop. China, our biggest importer, has it on it’s possible list of tariff products.
There is a lot more I could tell you, but I think you get the idea.
By the way, pecan is a French word that means hard nut.
That’s Agri View for today. I’m Everett Griner…
