Enrollment for the new Dairy Margin Protection Program continues through the end of this month. Dairy producers who haven’t already have until June first to review the changes to the program and sign up.
Enrollment opened in early April after the Department of Agriculture announced changes to the program stemming from the Bipartisan Budget Act passed by Congress in February. At the time, the National Milk Producers Federation encouraged dairy producers to “take a second look at the program” and its revisions.
According to USDA, dairy producers must select new coverage for 2018, even if they enrolled during the previous sign-up period last fall. Coverage choices made this spring for calendar year 2018 will be retroactive to January 1, 2018. All dairy operations seeking coverage must sign up during the enrollment period.
USDA also announced that dairy producers can participate in either MPP or the Livestock Gross Margin program for dairy, but not both.
