Pecan growers who are planting trees now, or even starting a new grove will have something to look forward to. A brand new variety just developed by the University of Georgia. It will be call Avalon. It is a large nut and it is highly resistant to scab. Two features that are highly desirable. Scab control is one of the costliest expenses in pecan growing. Commercial trees are sprayed several times a year. Now all trees are vulnerable. So, the new Avalon will be anxiously received. At this time only designated nurseries will be licensed to sell. Only four will be authorized. So here is what you will have. Large size, high quality and strong resistance. In the tree nut would you couldn’t ask for a whole lot more. Nobody knows yet but you can expect demand to exceed supply for a good long while.
That’s Agri View for today. I’m Everett Griner.
