The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced last week it will conduct species sampling and testing on imported raw ground-beef and veal, also checked for Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli, to confirm shipments don’t contain horse meat. This decision was made after the horse meat scandal that started in mid-January once products from burgers to lasagna were mislabeled in Europe. FSIS does not allow imports of horse meat from other countries to the U.S. for human consumption, thus they are increasing testing to enhance current safeguards and prevent fraudulently labeled products from entering the U.S.
