Starting this coming Monday, USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service will institute a zero-tolerance policy for six additional strains of E. coli responsible for human illness.
The strains USDA will target are Shiga-toxin producing E. coli serogroups O26, O45, O103, O111, O121 and O145. USDA states these serogroups can cause severe illness and even death. Young children and the elderly are at highest risk.
