Okeechobee, Florida is in a rural area and is a big farm town, particularly in dairy production…But located on the north side of Lake Okeechobee, it’s also a good example of why even agriculture folks in rural areas need to be aware that lots of urban thinking
people live in their midst. Listen to these interviews as local kindergarten teacher Elizabeth Pearce, herself
from a several generation beef cattle ranching family in the area, and her assistant in planning this Ag Day event, Valerie McKee,
explain why agriculture education is important even in rural areas like this one. As part of National Ag Day festivities, these two young ladies organized an event for about 130 local kindergarteners, involving several local farm operations and agribusinesses to help educate these children about where their food comes from.
