Record-breaking temperatures were reported around the state this week. Ft. Lauderdale reached 39 degrees, breaking its 43 degrees record low set in 1959. At Palm Beach International Airport, the temperature dipped to 37 degrees, shattering the 43 degrees record set in 1937. Other record lows were recorded in Moore Haven, Vero Beach and Clewiston.

Mutual’s Director of Communications, Andrew Meadows, says it’s a little early to predict next week’s cold event, but that the association is working closely with a forecaster at Agricultural Weather Information Service in Auburn, AL, to monitor the situation. “It could be a similar event to what we had earlier this week, with lows in the mid-20s,” says Meadows. “We’re keeping our fingers crossed.”

Citrus Industry Editor Ernie Neff offers a few bits of basic information about cold weather’s impact on citrus and the way growers protect against cold here.
