Youth Cattle Working Contest

The Alabama Cattlemen’s Association will be hosting a youth cattle working contest in May and we caught up with Erin Beasley with the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association for more details.

Beasley said, “Got an exciting new contest for our Alabama Junior Cattlemen’s Association members. The Youth Cattle Working Contest will be held on May the 2nd at Midstate Stockyards in Letohatchee. This is the first year that we’ve been able to offer this contest. It will be available for high school freshmen to senior teams. Groups of three members will get together and they will be given a pen of cattle to work and they will be judged based on how they handle those animals, how they administering vaccines and utilizing BQA standards.”

“And so this is a great opportunity for young people that are maybe a little bit more in the production space versus the show space to get involved in a contest and have an opportunity to potentially qualify for a regional competition that will be held and made possible through the State Beef Checkoff as well as some other supporters that will be part of the competition. We do have all the information up on bmabeef.org as well as a video that outlines how the competition will work and maybe a few tips as you prepare and think about how to build your team out for this. So, any questions about this competition can be relayed to our office. You can contact Bailey Watson and also just want to turn everybody’s attention as well to an upcoming AJCA Field Day which will be on April the 1st where we will be covering some information that will probably be handy as kids get prepared for the youth cattle working competition,” said Beasley.
